Things to Do around Terlingua House

Terlingua House is located about half way between Big Bend National Park and Big Bend Ranch State Park about 2 miles west of Terlingua Ghost Town. It is situated on an interesting geologic feature (cuesta) with an excellent view of the Chisos Mountains of Big Bend National Park. On the southern line of the 15 acre property, just across Long Draw, is the sheer 300-foot limestone cliff of Reed Plateau. On the adjoining property to the west you will find Long Draw Pizza (Wed-Sun, 5-9), where Nancy insists on making all of the pizzas herself to ensure the best pizza to go with the ice-cold refreshments.

Within a 5 to 20 minute drive of Terlingua House you will find the towns of Terlingua and Study Butte with outdoor recreation outfitters, shops, galleries, restaurants and bars, as well as Lajitas Golf Resort, the Barton Warnock Visitor Center in Big Bend Ranch State Park and the western entrance to Big Bend National Park. Go to VisitBigBend.com to get information about possible adventures and currently operating businesses.

Big Bend National Park offers many great options for hiking, rafting, stargazing and scenic driving. Go to their website to find out more about the Basin, Ross Maxwell Drive, Santa Elena Canyon and Boquillas Canyon, just to start.

Texas 170 (also known as River Road) winds its way along the Rio Grande to Presidio and is one of the most scenic roads in Texas. Terlingua House is actually located on River Road, but approximately an hours drive west gets you to Fort Leaton. Don’t miss the chance!

Within 2 Hours drive of Terlingua House, off of Texas 170 is the original ranch headquarters, Sauceda, for the Big Bend Ranch before it was a park. The trek up to Sauceda will give you a chance to try out your SUV and gate opening abilities. Don’t forget your permits from Fort Leaton or Barton Warnock Visitors Center.

Explore the historic towns of  Presidio, Texas and Ojinaga, Mexico. For lunch, we recommend Restaurante El Bucanero in OJ. Don't forget your passport.
Although Terlingua House has a two-night minimum, if you travel to Big Bend, no matter where you stay I hope you stay three nights to have at least two full days to take in the scenery and the culture. I highly recommend visiting with the very knowledgeable and friendly outfitters of the area, but for those of you who might not be anxious to call the outfitters for a day in the Rio Grande or a jeep tour, following are two Day Trips for your consideration:

Day Trip 1
Day Trip 2
